How Do They Each Work?

Creatine – Muscle Energy

Creatine is stored in muscles as creatine phosphate and used to rapidly regenerate ATP — the body’s primary energy currency during explosive movements. Research consistently shows creatine improves performance in short-duration, high-intensity exercise like weightlifting, sprints and intervals.

The effect builds gradually over 3–4 weeks of daily intake. It is a long-term supplement — you don’t feel it immediately, but the results are measurable over time.

Pre-Workout – Acute Energy and Focus

Pre-workout typically contains caffeine, beta-alanine, L-arginine and sometimes creatine. Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors, increasing alertness, focus and endurance. Beta-alanine buffers lactic acid in muscles. The effect is acute — you feel it within 30–45 minutes and it lasts 2–4 hours.

What Does Research Say About the Combination?

Study 1 – The Combination Is Safe and Effective

A study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research (2011) by Kreider et al. examined the effect of pre-workout formulas combined with creatine on training performance in male athletes. The combination produced significant improvements in bench press, leg press and body composition versus placebo, with no adverse effects.

Study 2 – Caffeine and Creatine: Neither Worse Nor Better

A well-cited study by Vandenberghe et al. in the Journal of Applied Physiology (1996) found that habitual caffeine intake during creatine supplementation did not impair muscle creatine uptake. Caffeine does not interfere with the creatine loading process.

Study 3 – Beta-Alanine and Creatine: Complementary Effects

A 10-week RCT in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism (2006) by Hoffman et al. found that combining beta-alanine (common in pre-workout) with creatine produced significantly greater strength and lean mass gains than creatine alone. The effects complement each other: creatine powers short explosive efforts, beta-alanine extends endurance at high intensity.

Practical Timing: How to Take Them

  • Pre-workout: 20–30 minutes before training for optimal caffeine and beta-alanine effect
  • Creatine: Timing matters less — daily consistency is key. Take it with your pre-workout or in a meal with carbohydrates
  • Simplest option: Mix creatine with your pre-workout drink right before training — works perfectly

Does My Pre-Workout Already Contain Creatine?

Many pre-workouts include creatine, but often at too low a dose (500–1000 mg). The effective maintenance dose is 3–5 g per day. If your pre-workout contains 1 g creatine per serving, you should supplement with an additional 2–4 g separately to reach the dose supported by research.
