Omega-3 fatty acids are among the most studied supplements in the world. Heart health, brain function, inflammation — most people know omega-3 is “good.” But for athletes and active individuals, there are more specific and concrete reasons to ensure adequate intake.
EPA vs DHA — Not the Same Thing
- 🐟 EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) — primarily anti-inflammatory. Converted into resolvins and protectins that actively resolve post-exercise inflammation
- 🧠 DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) — structural component in cell membranes, brain and retina. Critical for cognitive function, reaction time and sleep quality
ALA (from flaxseed, chia) is also omega-3, but conversion to EPA/DHA is under 5–10% — insufficient to produce the same effects.
Omega-3 and Muscle Recovery
EPA and DHA compete with the omega-6 fatty acid arachidonic acid for the same enzymes (COX and LOX). The more omega-3 in cell membranes, the lower the production of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids. Studies show omega-3 supplementation reduces exercise-induced muscle soreness (DOMS) and shortens recovery time.
Omega-3 and Muscle Protein Synthesis
An often-overlooked effect: omega-3 enhances the anabolic mTOR signalling pathway. An RCT by Smith et al. (2011) showed that 4g EPA+DHA daily increased muscle protein synthesis by 25% vs corn oil — without any exercise intervention. Combined with training and protein, the effect is likely additive.
