In 2023, headlines hit hard: WHO’s cancer research agency IARC classified aspartame as “possibly carcinogenic to humans”. Social media erupted. Consumers started checking which sweeteners were in their protein powders — and what they actually meant for their health.
This article breaks down what the research actually says, what the WHO classification really means, and why we at OptimumEssence chose to use sucralose in our products.
What Is Aspartame?
Aspartame is an artificial sweetener that is 200 times sweeter than sugar. It’s used in thousands of products globally — diet sodas (formerly Diet Coke), chewing gum, protein powders, protein bars and all kinds of light products.
In the body, aspartame breaks down into three components: aspartic acid, phenylalanine and methanol. It’s the phenylalanine that requires products containing aspartame to carry the warning “Contains a source of phenylalanine” — a mandatory EU label protecting people with PKU (phenylketonuria).
The WHO 2023 Classification — What Does It Actually Mean?
IARC (WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer) placed aspartame in Group 2B — “possibly carcinogenic to humans”.
That sounds alarming. But Group 2B also includes:
- Pickled vegetables
- Aloe vera extract
- Talc-based body powder
- Mobile phones (since 2011)
Group 2B means there is limited or inadequate evidence — not that the substance is proven to cause cancer. It’s a signal that more research is needed, not a health alarm.

EFSA (the European Food Safety Authority) simultaneously confirmed that the ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) of 40 mg/kg body weight remains safe. A 70 kg person would need to drink 9–14 cans of diet soda per day to approach the ADI limit.
What Studies Are Behind the Concern?
The most widely cited study was the NutriNet-Santé cohort (France, 2022) with 100,000+ participants. It found a weak association between high aspartame consumption and certain cancer types. Important caveats:
- It was an observational study — it does not prove cause and effect
- Confounders (other lifestyle factors) are difficult to isolate
- The association was strongest at very high consumption levels
Other randomised studies and animal studies have not consistently replicated these findings at normal consumption levels.
Who Should Definitely Avoid Aspartame?
- PKU patients — cannot metabolise phenylalanine; aspartame is directly harmful
- Pregnant women with PKU — additional restrictions apply
- Those consuming large amounts of artificially sweetened products daily
- Individuals who experience migraines or digestive issues linked to aspartame
What Is Sucralose — and Why Is It Different?
Sucralose is derived from sugar but chemically modified so the body does not absorb it — it passes straight through without being metabolised. It therefore provides no calories and does not affect blood sugar.

Why OptimumEssence Chose Sucralose
Many protein powders on the market use aspartame — often because it’s cheaper. When we formulated OptimumEssence whey protein, we asked ourselves a simple question: which option would we want our family to use?
The answer was sucralose. Not because aspartame at normal doses is proven harmful — it isn’t according to current consensus. But because:
- Sucralose lacks IARC’s “possibly carcinogenic” classification
- It requires no PKU warning and is accessible to more consumers

- The research on sucralose at normal dietary doses is more clear-cut

Conclusion: Should You Worry About Aspartame?
If you consume aspartame occasionally and stay well below the ADI limit, there is no proven health risk according to current research. But if you take protein powder daily — as many active people do — it’s reasonable to ask which sweetener the manufacturer chose and why.
